Exhaust aftertreatment system maintenance

All filters need to be cleaned or replaced at some point. In the case of gasoline particulate filters (GPF), for instance, particulates from the combustion process build up over time, despite fuels being cleaner than ever before.

In the case of diesel particulate filters (DPF), most of the difficulties experienced by the drivers of diesel vehicles are due to the way the aftertreatment system is intended to function. Short journeys and urban traffic are bad news for diesel particulate filters. The slow pace of traffic in congested cities mean that diesel exhaust gases rarely get hot enough to initiate the purging procedure.

The engine control unit will only start the purging process at exhaust gas temperatures above 650°C and herein lies the problem. If the parameters set in the engine control unit prevent the initiation of the purging process, then the procedure must be initiated manually, either by connecting the vehicle to a diagnostic computer or by means of a fuel additive.

If the partially blocked diesel particulate filter is not purged, any further accumulation of particulates will restrict the flow of exhaust gases, eventually forcing the driver to act. Failure to ensure the filter is purged leads to reduced performance, increased fuel consumption and, finally, DPF filter failure.

Ultimately, what this means for drivers of diesel-powered vehicles is that they have two choices to ensure that the filter is kept clean without a visit to the workshop. The first option is to take the vehicle on regular trips out of town, wasting time and fuel in the process.

The second option is by far the simplest and involves just pouring a tin of BIZOL DPF Regeneration + d61 into the fuel tank. Using an additive is the most convenient method of keeping the DPF free of soot and other contamination. There is no need to change driving habits and all that is needed is a tin of additive every third tankful of fuel.

Catalytic system component protection

BIZOL Catalytic System Protect+ g82 is designed to clean and protect the catalytic system including gasoline particulate filters (GPF). One application already dissolves many of the deposits, but it is advisable to use the treatment regularly to keep trouble at bay.

The need to clean and protect gasoline aftertreatment systems is more acute in regions where fuel quality cannot always be guaranteed but is actually necessary in all territories. If left unchecked a build-up of deposits will initially cause a gradual loss of power etc. Many telltale signs are ignored and put down to general wear and tear, which is the exactly why cleaning away the deposits is essential because it is far better (and cheaper) to prevent damage, than to cure it.

Problems caused by a build-up of deposits in the GPF and DPF include:

  • low performance
  • higher fuel consumption
  • increased emissions
  • poor driveability
  • poor starting & idle behaviour
  • emissions test failure
  • check engine (MIL) light illuminates

BIZOL aftertreatment system cleaners free particulate filters of deposits. And with the deposits gone, the aftertreatment system can do its job efficiently again, cleaning the exhaust gases as originally intended.

BIZOL Aftertreatment System Cleaners

BIZOL Catalytic System Protect+ g82 and BIZOL DPF Regeneration + d61 are compatible with all commercially-available fuels and provide the following benefits:

  • restores performance
  • frees catalytic converters and particulate filters from ash, soot and other deposits
  • restores gas flow and prevents premature failure
  • improves and restores the function of critical aftertreatment components
  • prevents check engine (MIL) light illuminating due to blockages
